Barnabas Dorr Palmer personal papers

Overview

The papers include (1) a testimony to his recent left-handness sworn before Douglas County Clerk in 1867, (2) a manuscript titled "A sketch of my military history" which he entered in a penmanship contest, sponsored by William Oland Bourne, editor of the "Soldier's Friend", (3) a letter from General U.S. Grant awarding Palmer first prize in the contest, and (4) letter awarding Palmer a $50 prize.

Overview

This Civil War diary of Douglas O. Lilley, a private in Company D of the Kansas 8th Regiment, contains his daily entries for the entirety of 1863, describing his military duties at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, his transfer as a prisoner to Benton Barracks in Missouri, his service in Tennessee and Georgia, and his return to Kansas and resumption of civilian life following disability discharge in December 1863. A letter enclosure is at RH MS P619.

Holsinger and Rose family papers

The Holsinger and Rose families immigrated to the United States in the 1700s. The collection reflects their activity in the Rosedale, Kansas, area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries by means of correspodence, poetry, newspaper clippings, and brief biographies, which address topics ranging from accounts of the Civil War, Kansan identity, politics and Christianity.

Hunter family letters

Overview This collection contains correspondence from the Hunter family, in excess of 75 letters and 230 pages, ranging from 1844 to 1913. Much of the correspondence is from Almon and George Hunter to their mother Betsy Graham, of Youngsville, Warren County, Pennsylvania. There is also a great deal of correspondence from Mrs. Graham's brother, Shubil D. Chappel.
